Willingboro Shoplifting Investigation Leads to Drug and Gun Charges

Burlington County NJ Drug Gun Charges LawyerAfter launching a shoplifting investigation, officials from the Willingboro Police Department arrested a suspect who was allegedly found in possession of a loaded handgun and heroin. The man is now facing several drug and weapons charges in Burlington County.

According to law enforcement officials, the investigation was prompted by multiple reports of shoplifting incidents at the Rite Aid located on Sunset Road in Willingboro. Police responded to the scene shortly after 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 9th, at which time they spoke with employees and received a description of the suspect.

Investigators ultimately identified 21-year-old Willingboro resident Tynell Mantez as the primary suspect. They confronted Mantez in the vicinity of the store, where he reportedly refused to remove his hands from his pockets. Upon arrest, a search of Mantez revealed a loaded .22-caliber revolver and heroin.

Mantez is now facing numerous charges for drug and weapons offenses, including: unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a defaced firearm, possession of hollow-point bullets, possession of a firearm during the commission of a drug offense (also known as a “drugs and guns violation,” possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to distribute, and obstructing the administration of law (also known as “obstruction”).

Due to the revolver, Mantez has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, which is a second degree crime in New Jersey. In fact, under N.J.S.A. 2C:39-5, these offenses entail a prison sentence ranging from 5 to 10 years, as well as a mandatory minimum period of parole ineligibility fixed at, or between, one-third and one-half of a sentence imposed, or 3 years, whichever is greater, because they are governed by New Jersey’s Graves Act.

Notice that Mantez was also charged with possession of a defaced firearm and possession of hollow-point bullets. Both of these offenses fall under the purview of “prohibited weapons and devices.” In fact, possession of prohibited weapons and devices is a crime in New Jersey, in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:39-3. When the offense involves a defaced firearm or hollow-point bullets (also known as body armor-penetrating ammunition, dum dum bullets, or hollow-nose bullets), this is a fourth degree crime, which may result in an 18-month term of incarceration in New Jersey State Prison. Clearly, with the combination of drug and weapons charges, Mr. Mantez is exposed to serious penalties.
